Fall for These Fall Comfort Foods
Happy Holidays! I hope I’m not the only one, but I broke code and already have my Christmas tree up early November! The holidays are here and it feels more festive than ever, and one of the joys of this season is great food, bright smiles, and joyful memories created. There is nothing more memorable than sitting on the couch with family and friend, each with a soft blanket and some delicious holiday comfort food in hand, and so here are some of the great fall comfort foods you may enjoy this holiday season:
Drinks: Many of us have sweet memories of sitting at the fire with the frost of winter glittering the window with snow, enjoying a warm cup of hot cocoa. For many that memory may be playing a card game with Eggnog, or watching a Christmas movie with a cup of more marshmallows than hot chocolate, or simply sitting at the table enjoying grandma’s fine cooking with the invitation, “try this brown butter sage sauce.” You can go from hot cider to sparkling apple cider to good ole’ fashion apple juice if you prefer.
Mug Cake: I don’t know about you, but there are so many ways to drink the holidays, so to speak, and when you hear mug cake you aren’t sure if it is a drink or a dessert or both. If you haven’t had one, you’ve got to try this mug cake out! For those who don’t want to deal with the inconvenience of using baking equipment and just want to enjoy an easy-to-make, warm and rich mini cake, this is the dessert for you. The second you sit on the couch with one of these, every eye in the room will be on you and wanting to enjoy a taste. Is it healthy? Well, that entirely depends on your version of what healthy is.
Pies: Nothing is more satisfying than gaining a few pounds at the dinner table in one meal, followed up with a delicious pumpkin or cherry pie. It is un-American to eat a Thanksgiving dinner without pie afterward, but what is more American than having pie as an antre? Served with stuffing, try this chicken pie and stop yourself from devouring it all on your own. Feel free to replace the chicken with turkey, but beware: you might pass out before you reach the couch. Why did the turkey cross the road? Because it was Thanksgiving and he wanted everyone to think he was a chicken.
The most fattening time of the year has come and with every mouthful, the cheer of being surrounded by loved ones makes this season such a special one. From pumpkin pie to pumpkin rolls to pumpkin bread to pumpkin bowls, may every fall comfort food be thoroughly enjoyed, and may every memory be thought of with a smile.
